Some grow kits are ready to grow when you buy them but some are still colonizing. If you open your box and you see brown substrate and its not a solid whiteish block yet, put your block in a dark room temperature place (like a cupboard) until the "ready to grow date" located on the back of the box.

HOW TO USE YOUR GROW KIT!
OYSTER MUSHROOM GROW KIT INSTRUCTIONS
1) Cut a slit along the “X” on the bag.
2) Place the extra bag provided over the mushroom block to create a greenhouse dome over the “X”. (This prevents the block from drying out but also allowing fresh air to reach the mycelium and mushrooms.)
3) Mist the inside of the greenhouse bag at least once a day until the mushrooms start to appear. (This creates the humid environment.) See photo below.
4) Place the mushroom block with the “X” and the greenhouse bag indoors under bright, indirect sunlight OR bright artificial light. A window sill that does NOT get direct sunlight is perfect. (Imagine a forest floor in a rainforest. Too much direct sunlight will dry out the mycelium and create too much heat. A cool, humid environment with fresh air is the aim)
5) Once small mushrooms begin to form in approximately 1-2 weeks, you can remove the bag but keep misting the mushrooms with a fine mist to maintain humidity. Do NOT over mist, as this may cause rot or contamination.
6) If stems are elongated and caps are small, increase air and light exposure.
7) Clusters will mature in approximately 4-8 days. Harvest clusters of mushrooms before the caps unfurl. To remove clusters, grab and twist or cut with a knife.
8) Always cooks your mushrooms.
9) After the kit has finished the initial fruiting, return the outer bag over the harvested block to maintain high humidity levels and you might get a second flush!
